How To Choose The Class That Is Right For Your Young Dancer

New Students:
Use the age and experience descriptions below to choose the class best suited for your needs. The references to previous classicalballet training refer to the actual study of ballet technique, which does not normally begin until a child is 7 or 8 years old. If you need assistance, please call our office at (770) 476-4306.
Current DSB Students:
DANCE DISCOVERY classes are meant to be an introduction to the level your young dancer will enter in the Fall.

DANCEcamp
Fun-filled programs for children ages 3 and up! Each camp includes a daily dance class, PLUS ballet videos and fun activites teaching dance history, music, pantomime, and much, much more!

Cinderella DANCEcamp , 3 year olds and young 4 year olds
A great way to introduce the wonders of ballet to 3 year olds and young 4 year olds! Following their daily 45-minute dance class, these young students will enjoy fun activities, such as making a Magic Wand, just like the one Cinderella's Fairy Godmother has! They'll also get to color pictures from the story, and act out some of the different parts. During the week, they'll get to watch the Royal Ballet dance the ballet version of the story, with two of the craziest Ugly Step-sisters anyone has ever seen! At the end of the camp, they will go home with their own DANCEcamp Memories scrapbook, with all the fun things they've done, and a picture of their class!

August 3 - 7 daily 9:30 - 12:30 Class Code: 16209

Coppélia DANCEcamp for 4 & 5 year olds & young 6 year olds
Coppélia - the story of a doll that comes to life! Franz thinks she's real, but his girlfriend, Swanhilda, is not so sure! Every day, after their dance class, these dancers will get to watch a film of the Royal Ballet dancing this beautiful ballet, so by the end of the week, they will have seen it all. They'll also get to learn about the history of ballet, and famous dancers, as well as exploring their own creativity through exercises in pantomime and dramatic interpretation. Students also learn valuable lessons about anatomy, health and nutrition, music and dance vocabulary. And every child goes home with a free picture of their class and their own DANCEcamp Memories Scrapbook - that they've created themselves!

July 13 - 17 daily 9:30 - 12:30 Class Code: 16109
August 3 - 7 daily 9:30 - 12:30 Class Code: 16309

Swan Lake DANCEcamp for 6 - 8 year olds
Swan Lake is the most famous ballet in the world. It's the magical story of a prince who falls in love with a beautiful princess, only to learn that she has been bewitched by an evil magician who turns her into a swan every day! After their daily our students will watch this famous ballet, as danced by the Royal Ballet and then spend their time with other fun-filled activities that teach them about dance history, music, pantomime, and a lot more. At the end of the week, they'll come home with their own scrapbook which includes all of their work for the week.

August 3 - 7 daily 2:00 - 5:00 Class Code: 16409

Summer Programs For Advanced Dancers
This summer, the Duluth School of Ballet is pleased to offer a series of classes for ballet students who want to further their knowledge of the art form and improve their technique. Summer study for serious dance students is critical - three months away from the ballet studio is time that cannot be regained. The generally accepted rule of thumb is that for every class you miss, it will take you two classes just to get back to where you were before you missed the first class!

The Advanced level classes are recommended for dancers who are already on pointe or are within a few months of going on pointe. Any DSB student who has just completed Grade II-B, or is enrolled in Grade III or higher should take these classes.

Unlike our Dance Discovery program, these classes are offered over the entire summer, beginning June 23, and ending August 6.

The classes will be taught by our regular faculty, as well as special guest teachers.

To take these classes, students purchase a class card for the number of classes they plan to attend. The card can be used for any of the classes listed below:

ADVANCED LEVEL CLASSES

Advanced Ballet/Pointe Tuesdays 10:00 - 12:00 Class Code: 76109
Thursdays 10:00 - 12:00
Thursdays 6:00 - 8:00

GUIDE TO CHOOSING WHICH ADVANCED CLASSES TO ATTEND: All classes usually include ballet and pointe work. Depending on attendance, the TUESDAY and THURSDAY MORNING ballet classes may be divided into two classes.

IMPORTANT: Because we have no way of knowing how many students will be coming to any given class, we reserve the right to cancel the class on any day/night if less than 6 students attend. This rarely happens - but you need to be aware of this policy.

Summer Intensive

This summer, we are offering a one-week summer intensive for advanced students. Class will begin at 9:30 each morning with the Therapeutic Barre, followed by a ballet technique class from 9:45 to 11:15. A pointe/variations class will follow from 11:30 to 12:30. After lunch, students will learn choreography from our ballet for next season, The 12 Dancing Princesses. The day will end at 4:30.

Participants will be broken into groups according to ability, both in ballet technique and pointe experience.

Students who will be enrolled in our Grade III, Grade IV, and Grade V programs next year are strongly encouraged to participate. Students who do not wish to participate in the choreography portion may take the intensive as a half-day program.
