Ballet School Manners
If we all pay attention to these, we will have the best ballet school anywhere!
Dancers show respect for themselves by:
- Being prompt for class.
- Being dressed properly for class, without underwear under leotards, without necklaces, bracelets or jewelry of any kind (other than small earrings), and with shoe strings either tucked in or tied in a knot and cut off.
- Having their hair up off the neck - for Grade I-A and up it must be in a bun. For the Primary level, a bun is preferred. For Grade II-B and higher, it must be impeccable!
Dancers show respect for others by:
- Keeping their hands to themselves during class.
- Waiting quietly for others to have a turn.
- Waiting until the music is finished before entering the classroom.
- Talking only during share time, or when spoken to by the instructor.
- Not playing with other students' belongings in the dressing room.
Dancers show respect for their teacher and the art form they are learning by:
- Being properly dressed and ready for class on time.
- Listening when the teacher speaks.
- When sitting on the floor, sitting indian-style with backs up straight.
- Being prepared for their turn.
- Always asking before leaving the room for any reason.
- Applauding their teacher at the end of class.
Dancers show respect for the studio by:
- Leaving gum, food, or drink outside.
- Never hanging on the barres.
- Never running or doing gymnastics in the studio or lobby.
- Putting trash and cans in the proper places.
- Putting away books and magazines when they are finished with them.
- Treating the lobby with respect.
- Always wearing something over their ballet clothes when entering and leaving the studio, and never wearing their ballet shoes outside.
Parents show respect for dancers, teachers and the studio by:
- Knocking before entering the classroom if a class is in progress.
- Asking the receptionist to get a child from class.
- Standing away from the viewing window if it becomes obvious that students are being distracted.
- Having students ready for class before entering the classroom.
- Picking students up promptly after class.
- Watching over their children while waiting in the lobby.
- Ensuring their children know and understand the school rules.
The studio shows respect for dancers and parents by:
- Maintaining a healthy, loving environment in which students can learn.
- Providing students with the best classes possible.
- Starting and ending classes on time.
- Providing everyone with current, up-to-date information in a timely manner.
- Always treating parents and students with respect by listening to their questions, and being responsive to their wants and needs as best it can.
- Keeping the studio clean and neat.
