What To Wear For Class

Dressing For Class

In keeping with the traditions of classical ballet, girls must wear their hair fastened securely in a bun on the back of the head for all classes. Pony tails are allowed for classes in the Early Childhood Program. (There are practical resons for this, as well as aesthetic ones. Body alignment is critical in ballet, and the instructor must be able to see the line of a students body from the head down. Hair not up and off the neck can prevent this.) Boys hair must be neatly combed.

Laces and/or ribbons must be tucked into the shoes. Do not wear jewelry in class (earrings, watches, rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.). Please leave these items at home!

A girls dressing room is located off the lobby. Please do not leave pocketbooks or valuables in the dressing room during classes - take them into the studio with you. Better yet, don't even bring valuables with you. Students should not enter and leave the premises dressed only in leotard and tights. This is not proper. Please wear a "cover-up".

Dress Code

The Duluth School of Ballet has a dress code for students. Please consult the chart below to determine the leotard color required for your classes. WE SUGGEST YOU TAKE THIS SHEET WITH YOU WHEN YOU PURCHASE YOUR DANCEWEAR

A Special Note About Leotards and Tights

We do not specify any one style of leotard. However, leotards must not have any extraneous decoration on them (i.e.bows, attached skirts, sequins, glitter, ruffles, puffed sleeves, etc.). A ballet class is not about who has the cutest or fanciest leotard. Leotards with attached skirts are not permitted.

The color "pink" refers to either "ballet pink" or "theatrical pink". Both are pale pink in color. Please do not wear hot pink or deep pink. No "shimmery" tights.

Skirts

Students may wear a short chiffon ballet skirt in class that matches the color of their leotard. The length must be no longer than mid-thigh. Students in the early childhood program may wear skirts with an elastic waistband. All others must be the wrap-around style. The skirt must not be attached to the leotard.

Sweaters, etc.

During the winter months, students may wear a wrap-around ballet sweater that matches the color of the leotard. No other attire, such as sweat shirts, leg warmers, or t-shirts, is permitted without the express permission of the instructor.
